Reaching lengths of over eighteen feet, the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the longest venomous snake on the planet. Its genus name, Ophiophagus, literally translates to “snake-eater”—a testament to its specialized predatory lifestyle of exclusively hunting and consuming other snakes, including deadly venomous pit vipers, kraits, and massive constricting pythons.
When confronted, the king cobra can elevate up to a third of its body straight off the ground, standing eye-to-eye with an adult human while flaring its wide ribbed neck hood. Rather than a typical snake hiss, it uses specialized tracheal diverticula resonance chambers in its throat to produce a deep, rumbling guttural growl resembling a snarling dog.
Biological Fact: Female king cobras are the only snakes in the world that actively build complex above-ground vegetative nests to guard and incubate their eggs.
A single defensive bite can inject up to 500 milligrams of fast-acting cardiotoxic and neurotoxic venom, enough to induce paralysis and respiratory failure in an adult Asian elephant within three hours. Yet despite their terrifying potency, king cobras are intelligent, secretive forest guardians that build dedicated leaf-litter nests to incubate their eggs.
