Known to ancient Egyptians and depicted extensively in tomb reliefs along the Nile over 5,000 years ago, the electric catfish (Malapterurus electricus) can grow up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) long and weigh over 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
Unlike electric eels which generate electrical shocks from specialized tail muscles, the electric catfish derives its shock from a specialized electrogenic organ formed from modified dermal body wall muscle covering nearly its entire torso.
The 450-Volt Bio-Battery Mantle
This continuous cellular sheath, known as the electric mantle, is composed of millions of disc-shaped electrocytes wired in series and parallel.
When discharge is triggered, it releases rapid bursts of electrical pulses reaching 350 to 450 volts with currents up to 1 ampere. This discharge is potent enough to completely stun surrounding fish and painfully shock wading animals or humans.
Nocturnal Stun-and-Engulf Hunting
The electric catfish is an ambush hunter that emerges from hollow logs and rocky crevices after dusk.
Using its weak electro-receptors to locate prey in zero visibility, it approaches an unsuspecting fish and fires an intense volley of high-frequency electrical shocks. Paralyzed instantly, the prey floats helpless in the water column, allowing the catfish to glide in and swallow it whole.
