The Fastest Shark in the Ocean
The shortfin mako is the undisputed speed champion of the shark world. Capable of sustained cruising speeds of 35 km/h and explosive bursts reaching 74 km/h (46 mph), it can chase down the fastest fish in the sea, including bluefin tuna and marlin.
When hooked or hunting near the surface, the mako can launch itself completely out of the ocean, executing spectacular aerial breaches up to 9 meters (30 feet) in the air.
Endothermic Warm-Blood Mechanics
Unlike most cold-blooded fish, the shortfin mako is endothermic, maintaining its swimming muscles and brain up to 7 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding seawater.
It achieves this through a specialized countercurrent heat-exchange circulatory system called the rete mirabile (“wonderful net”). Arteries carrying cold, oxygenated blood from the gills pass right alongside veins carrying warm blood from active red swimming muscles, transferring heat back into the core to keep muscles operating at peak mechanical efficiency.
Hydrodynamic Denticles and Needle Teeth
The mako’s metallic cobalt skin is covered in microscopic tooth-like dermal denticles with flexible trailing edges. These tiny scales bristle slightly during rapid swimming, preventing turbulent water flow and reducing skin friction drag by up to 10%.
Its teeth are long, slender, and curved backward with smooth, razor-sharp edges. Exposed even when the mouth is closed, these needle-like fangs are engineered to securely grip slick, high-speed pelagic prey on the first strike.
