Filmed by deep-submergence vehicles exploring oceanic trenches, Magnapinna is among the rarest and most visually striking creatures in the marine world. It holds the record for the deepest squid ever observed alive, reaching depths of over 6,200 meters (20,300 feet).

Its mantle is flanked by two enormous, heart-shaped fins that undulate slowly to provide precise propulsion, while its ten arms and tentacles extend up to twenty times the length of its body.

The 90-Degree Elbow Joint Mechanism

Unlike any other cephalopod, the arms and tentacles of the bigfin squid feature distinct 90-degree outward bends, resembling human elbows. From these joints, ultra-fine elastic filaments drop vertically downward like fishing lines.

Scientists hypothesize that the squid drifts centimeters above the seafloor, trailing its sticky, sensory-laden filaments through the sediment to snag wandering isopods and amphipods.

Abyssal Pressure and Cold Adaptation

Surviving in hadal zones requires specialized biochemical machinery. Bigfin squid tissues contain high concentrations of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a protein-stabilizing osmolyte that prevents water pressure from collapsing cellular membranes.

No mature specimen has ever been captured intact, leaving much of their reproductive cycle and lifespan among the most intriguing mysteries of modern oceanography.
