The Gargoyle of the Swamps
Standing up to five feet tall with an intense, unblinking glare, the Shoebill Stork looks like a survivor from the late Cretaceous. It hunts with superhuman patience, standing completely motionless in muddy papyrus swamps for hours at a time like a stone statue. When an unsuspecting lungfish surfaces for air, the shoebill collapses forward in a violent maneuver called “collapsing,” scooping fish, mud, and vegetation into its massive Dutch-shoe bill.
Bio Fact: During courtship and territorial displays, adult shoebills snap their upper and lower bills together at high speed, generating an acoustic acoustic burst that sounds identical to a heavy automatic machine gun firing across the marsh.

The shoebill’s bill is the third longest among living birds and features razor-sharp edges and a heavy curved hook at the tip. It uses this edge like a scythe to decapitate large swamp fish and strip away thick vegetation before swallowing prey whole.
