Nature’s Keratin Fortress
The Ground Pangolin looks like an ancient armored pinecone brought to life. Covered in razor-edged scales made of dense keratin (the exact structural protein in human fingernails), it has zero teeth and no offensive weapons. Instead, when threatened, it tucks its soft head into its tail and snaps shut with muscular force that even adult lions and leopards cannot pry open.
Bio Fact: A pangolin’s muscular tongue originates deep inside its pelvic cavity near the kidneys, stretching over 16 inches long when extended into underground termite mounds.
The Specialized Ant Vacuum
With massive digging claws on its front feet, the pangolin tears open rock-hard termite mounds in seconds. It seals its nostrils and thick ear flaps tight against angry insect soldiers, slurping up thousands of termites per minute with specialized saliva before grinding them down in its muscular, pebble-filled gizzard.
