The Living Constellations of Waitomo
In the subterranean chambers of New Zealand’s Waitomo Caves, the ceilings are illuminated by thousands of glowing points of blue-green light that resemble a starry night sky.
These lights are produced by the larvae of Arachnocampa luminosa, a specialized species of fungus gnat found nowhere else in the world. The bioluminescence is generated inside the larva’s excretory organ (Malpighian tubules) through a chemical reaction between the enzyme luciferase and the compound luciferin.
The Sticky Silk Fishing Lines
Each individual larva constructs a silk nest along the cave ceiling and suspends dozens of vertical silk lines, known as snares, hanging down up to 50 centimeters (20 inches).
The larva coats each line with droplets of sticky, acidic mucus. Attracted to the glowing light which mimics the open night sky, flying insects like mayflies and midges fly upward and become entangled in the sticky snare lines.
Reeling in the Catch
When a trapped insect struggles, vibrations travel up the silk strand to the larva’s nest.
The glowworm immediately hauls the line upward with its mouthparts, swallowing the silk as it reels in the prey before biting the insect to inject digestive fluids and consuming it.
