Busting the β3-Second Memoryβ Myth
The old myth that goldfish have a 3-second memory is completely false. Scientific studies have proven that Goldfish (Carassius auratus) remember complex color cues, feeding schedules, and maze pathways for up to 5 months. They can even be trained to push levers, play mini soccer, and distinguish between classical music composers!
βWhen winter freezes ponds solid and cuts off all oxygen, goldfish switch to a specialized metabolic pathway that converts lactic acid into ethanol (alcohol), swimming unharmed through oxygen-free frozen water for months.β
Ultraviolet Tetrachromatic Vision
While humans have three types of cone cells in our eyes, goldfish have four (tetrachromatic). They can perceive colors across the entire human visual spectrum plus ultraviolet (UV) light and polarized light, seeing glowing colors in water that are invisible to human eyes.
