The Strongest Bio-Electricity on Earth
Despite its name and snake-like body, the Volta Electric Eel (Electrophorus voltai) is actually a knifefish closely related to catfish. Discovered in 2019 in the Brazilian Amazon, it holds the world record for animal electricity generation, delivering staggering jolts of 860 volts, over seven times the voltage of a standard US wall outlet.

High-Voltage Remote Muscle Control
When hunting in pitch-black murky riverbeds, the eel emits low-voltage pulses (10V) to map surroundings. When prey is nearby, it discharges rapid high-voltage doublet pulses that hijack the prey’s nervous system, forcing its muscles to involuntarily twitch and reveal its hiding location before delivering the knockout discharge.
