# IUCN Red List Conservation Status

> Browse species by IUCN Red List conservation status, from Least Concern to Critically Endangered.

- [Critically Endangered](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/critically-endangered/) (18 species)
  - The IUCN Red List category immediately before extinction in the wild. Populations are small enough that individual animals matter to the total.
- [Endangered](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/endangered/) (42 species)
  - Species facing a very high risk of extinction, usually through habitat loss, hunting, or a collapsing food supply.
- [Vulnerable](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/vulnerable/) (63 species)
  - Species heading the wrong way. Still numerous in places, but the trend is clear enough for the IUCN to act on it.
- [Near Threatened](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/near-threatened/) (30 species)
  - Species that do not yet qualify as threatened but are close enough to be watched carefully.
- [Least Concern](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/least-concern/) (266 species)
  - Widespread and stable, for now. Being common is not the same as being safe, and several of these were assessed decades ago.
- [Data Deficient](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/data-deficient/) (4 species)
  - Species nobody has been able to count properly. Common in the deep sea, where surveying is expensive and rare.
- [Not Evaluated](https://animaltracks.wiki/status/not-evaluated/) (122 species)
  - Species the IUCN has not assessed. Most of the described species on Earth sit in this gap.

Conservation categories are from the [IUCN Red List of Threatened Species](https://www.iucnredlist.org/). AnimalTracks is independent of IUCN.
