# Hyenas, Mongooses & Allies (*Feliformia & Caniformia Allies*)

> Specialized carnivores featuring bone-dissolving stomach acids, venom resistance, and tactical social clans.

This evolutionary cluster spans distinctive carnivoran families like hyenas, mongooses, meerkats, civets, and skunks. From bone-cracking sagittal crests to venom-resistant mongooses whose nerve-muscle receptors are thought to keep snake neurotoxins from binding, these creatures master tactical niches across deserts, savannahs, and tropical forests.

## Key Evolutionary Adaptations

- Hyena stomach acids reach pH levels near 1.0, digesting dense bones, teeth, horns, and hooves completely.
- In venom-resistant mongooses, sugar groups at the toxin-binding site of a nerve-muscle receptor are thought to stop snake alpha-neurotoxins from latching on.
- Striped skunks can fire musk from their paired anal glands 5 or 6 times in rapid succession, striking objects up to about 5 to 6 meters away.

## Member Species (11 Creatures)

- [Binturong](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/binturong/) (*Arctictis binturong*)
  - **Superpower**: Urine containing 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, the compound likely responsible for its popcorn smell, plus a prehensile tail that works as a fifth limb.
  - **Musical Match**: Kupla (Chillhop & Lo-Fi Beats)
- [Common Raccoon](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/raccoon/) (*Procyon lotor*)
  - **Superpower**: A cat-sized brain with near-primate neuron density, paired with forepaws that have a highly developed sense of touch
  - **Musical Match**: Gorillaz (Trip-Hop & Velvet Downtempo)
- [Egyptian Mongoose](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/egyptian-mongoose/) (*Herpestes ichneumon*)
  - **Superpower**: Predicts and dodges a snake's strike, then catches its head before another strike; resists α-bungarotoxin, one of cobra venom's neurotoxins
  - **Musical Match**: Mindforce (Hardcore Punk & Crossover Thrash)
- [Fossa](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/fossa/) (*Cryptoprocta ferox*)
  - **Superpower**: A tail about half its total length that helps it balance and jump from branch to branch, plus retractable claws and flexible ankle joints that help it climb down a tree headfirst.
  - **Musical Match**: Squarepusher (Drum & Bass / Spatial Jungle)
- [Kinkajou](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/kinkajou/) (*Potos flavus*)
  - **Superpower**: Rotates 180 degrees between its pelvis and head

- [Meerkat](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/meerkat/) (*Suricata suricatta*)
  - **Superpower**: A rotating sentinel watch with alarm calls graded by urgency, dark eye patches that cut the sun's glare, and some immunity to a scorpion's sting.
  - **Musical Match**: Bob Marley & The Wailers (Roots Reggae & Heavy Dub)
- [Red Panda](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/red-panda/) (*Ailurus fulgens*)
  - **Superpower**: A false thumb: an enlarged wrist bone (the radial sesamoid) it uses to grasp bamboo.
  - **Musical Match**: Snail's House (Hyperpop & Kawaii Future Bass)
- [Spotted Hyena](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/spotted-hyena/) (*Crocuta crocuta*)
  - **Superpower**: Jaws that crush bone with ease, in a skull that helps spread the stress of a bite.
  - **Musical Match**: Death Grips (Industrial Hip-Hop & Experimental Noise)
- [Striped Hyena](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/striped-hyena/) (*Hyaena hyaena*)
  - **Superpower**: Jaws that crush and swallow bones, horns and hooves, and a digestive system adapted to maximize the nutrition it gets from its food; only the horns, hooves and hair come back up.
  - **Musical Match**: Boy Harsher (Gothic Rock & Post-Punk)
- [Striped Skunk](https://animaltracks.wiki/animals/striped-skunk/) (*Mephitis mephitis*)
  - **Superpower**: A U-shaped stance and paired anal glands that fire a temporarily blinding thiol spray up to about 6 meters
