Discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, the Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) is the only known creature capable of impersonating multiple distinct animal species. Rather than simply blending into background rocks, it actively changes its shape, skin texture, color banding, and movement speed to cosplay dangerous sea creatures.

Researchers have documented the mimic octopus performing live impressions of:
- Lionfish: spreading all eight arms like venomous feathered fins.
- Flatfish / Sole: pulling all arms backward into a flat oval and skimming across sand.
