The “Popcorn” Happy Hop
When excited by the scent of fresh grass or bell peppers, a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) performs a signature maneuver known as popcorning. It suddenly leaps several inches straight up into the air, twisting its body and kicking its back legs like popping corn kernels.
“Guinea pigs possess an extensive acoustic language consisting of 11 distinct vocalizations, including the famous high-pitched ‘wheek’ (requesting food), rhythmic ‘purring’ (contentment), and soft ‘chattering’.”
Constant Vitamin C Craving
Just like humans and primates, guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own Vitamin C due to a prehistoric gene mutation. They must consume daily dietary Vitamin C from fresh vegetables like bell peppers and kale to maintain healthy cartilage and immune health.
